You got the report back, and it was full of letters and numbers: MTHFR, COMT, GST, flagged in red.

You walked away with one question: is this why I'm sick, and is there anything I can do about it?

Your genes matter, but they aren't the final verdict. They work more like a set of switches than a fixed sentence, and what flips those switches is something you have far more influence over than most people realize.

What Your Genes Actually Do

Your genes are instructions, not commands. They describe how your body tends to process nutrients, handle stress, clear toxins and respond to inflammation. But how strongly those instructions get expressed depends on the signals your body receives every day.

This is the core of epigenetics. Genes can be turned up or turned down depending on the environment they're operating in. The same genetic pattern can look very different in two women depending on what each one's body is dealing with.

What Genetic Testing Can and Can't Tell You

A genetic test can show useful patterns:

  • How efficiently your body may run certain detox pathways
  • How you tend to process and respond to stress
  • Which nutrients you may need more of
  • Where your methylation may need extra support
  • Which systems may be more vulnerable under pressure

What it can't show is your outcome. A flagged gene is a tendency, not a diagnosis, and it doesn't tell you whether that tendency is actually showing up in your body right now.

What Actually Controls Genetic Expression

The factors that determine whether a genetic tendency becomes a real problem are mostly environmental: ongoing toxin exposure, nutrient status, chronic stress, sleep and daily rhythm, and the overall load your body is carrying.

This matters for Hashimoto's in particular. Epigenetics and autoimmunity are closely linked. A genetic predisposition may set the stage, but it's usually the environment that triggers the immune system to start attacking the thyroid.

Why the Fear Gets in the Way

Many women come out of genetic testing more afraid than when they went in. They hear "bad genes" and assume their condition is fixed and their potential limited, and that because their mother had it, they were always going to have it.

That fear can quietly stall healing. When you believe nothing can change, it's hard to commit to the work that actually changes things.

Why Genetic Testing Alone Falls Short

Genetic results on their own leave out the context that gives them meaning. They don't account for your current toxic load, mineral status, gut health, nervous system state or how your systems are interacting with each other.

Reading a genetic report without that context is like reading one page of a book and assuming you know the ending. Genes need context before they can guide a plan.

How to Use Your Genetic Information Well

Used properly, genetic testing becomes a roadmap rather than a source of worry. That means understanding which pathways may need more support, then addressing the environment those genes are responding to: opening drainage, restoring minerals, calming the nervous system and reducing toxic load, in the right order.

When the foundation is supported first, genetic tendencies often become much quieter. The pathway that looked "broken" on paper may simply have been overwhelmed.

What It Looks Like When You Work With Your Genes

When your genetic patterns are supported instead of feared, the changes tend to show up gradually across several systems. Energy becomes more stable. Detox pathways handle their load more smoothly. Symptoms that seemed fixed start to shift, and progress holds instead of slipping backward.

That only happens when the approach is systematic. Taking a supplement for each flagged gene, in no particular order, rarely gets you there.

Where to Start

Your genes aren't working against you. Give them the right environment and the right support, and they can become one of your strongest allies in healing.

I'm Dr. Lori Kalie, DC, CFMP, IHP. I've spent 12 years working exclusively with women with Hashimoto's. Understanding genetic patterns in the context of the whole body, not in isolation, is part of how I build every client's plan.
