You've done the breathing apps. The meditation. The bath with the candle.
And your body still won't let go.
If rest feels impossible no matter how hard you try to force it, the problem likely isn't your effort. You may need nervous system regulation before anything else — your body is stuck in survival mode, and survival mode doesn't respond to a five-minute meditation.
What "Stuck" Actually Means
Your nervous system has two main settings: fight-or-flight (sympathetic) and rest-and-digest (parasympathetic).
When a system stays locked in fight-or-flight, a few things happen automatically, whether you notice them or not. Digestion slows down. Inflammation climbs. Sleep gets harder to reach, and hormone production shifts away from balance and toward pure survival.
It's not that your body is malfunctioning. It's doing exactly what it was built to do when it believes a threat is still active, even after the actual threat is long gone.
Signs It's More Than Just Stress
A few patterns tend to point toward a nervous system that's stuck, rather than a personality trait or "just being an anxious person":
- Startling easily at ordinary sounds
- A stomach that reacts to foods it used to tolerate fine
- Light or sound feeling more intense than it should
- Feeling too hot or too cold when the room temperature hasn't changed
- A heart rate that spikes over small things, or races for no clear reason
- Muscle tension that doesn't ease even after a full night's sleep
None of these mean something is wrong with you. They tend to mean your body has been running an alarm for longer than it was ever designed to.
What Keeps a Nervous System Stuck
A locked nervous system rarely comes from one event. It tends to build from a stack: past trauma, chronic infections the body is still managing, ongoing environmental stressors, sustained emotional stress, or physical injury the body never fully recovered from.
Each one adds to the load. Eventually the system stops resetting between stressors, and "on" becomes the default instead of the exception.
Why Relaxation Techniques Alone Don't Work
This is usually where the frustration sets in.
Meditation feels impossible instead of calming. A hard workout leaves you wired instead of settled. Supplements aimed at sleep or stress don't seem to reach whatever's actually driving the tension, and sleep stays out of reach no matter how consistent the bedtime routine is.
That's not a sign you're doing relaxation wrong. It's a sign the nervous system needs to be regulated before it can respond to any of those tools at all.
What Nervous System Regulation Actually Requires
Getting a locked system to reset tends to require a specific approach: gradual downregulation rather than forcing calm, addressing stressors in the right sequence, physical safety cues the body can actually register, and space to process what the body has been holding onto.
This is why nervous system regulation is the first phase of the work I do with every client, not something layered in later. A body that still believes it's in danger won't prioritize digestion, hormone balance, or healing, no matter what protocol sits on top of it.
What It Looks Like When the System Resets
When regulation happens in the right order, the shifts tend to show up in ordinary moments first.
You walk through the door in the evening without snapping at your kids over something small. You sit in the car before a stressful meeting and your chest stays steady instead of tight. You fall asleep without your mind replaying the day on a loop until midnight.
Where to Start
Your nervous system isn't broken. It's stuck in a protective loop that hasn't gotten the signal it's safe to stand down.
I'm Dr. Lori Kalie, DC, CFMP, IHP. I've spent 12 years working exclusively with women with Hashimoto's, and nervous system regulation is where I start with every single client, weeks 1 through 4, before any supplement or targeted protocol comes into the picture.
